New Course: LSIS 5840-Cataloging and Classification

Students – We are happy to announce that we offer LSIS 5840 Cataloging and Classification as a new course in Fall 2021.   This course will help you prepare for the rapidly changing information organization environment and open doors to many potential careers such as cataloger/classifier, metadata specialist, archival description professional, taxonomy developer, digital asset management, and archival description professionals.

The challenge of organizing and arranging access to information remains a core area of concern in the information profession.  It is also an exciting change and employment growth area as technological advancements, user expectations, and available information products constantly shift. This new course concerns how traditional cataloging in a library setting can be expanded and transferred to objects for future access, use, and discoverability in any environment.

LSIS 5840 introduces students to the theory, principles, core concepts, best practices, and trends of cataloging and classification. This course covers topics including the creation and interpretation of bibliographic records, descriptive cataloging, subject analysis, the interpretation of authority records, RDA/ AACR2r, MARC, Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Library Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Dublin Core, and copy cataloging with OCLC editing.  The focus is primarily on books and printed materials but will also include digital resources.

LSIS 5840 Cataloging and Classification is an elective for any MLS student, but students are highly encouraged to take it after LSIS 5425 Organization of Information.
