Joint MA–MIS Program Degree Requirements

Joint MA–MIS Program Degree Requirements

Students will earn a Master of Arts in Educational Technology and Master of Information Science.

Students will complete degree requirements for an MA in Educational Technology from the NCCU School of Education (or “SOE”) and a Master’s Degree in Information Science from the NCCU School of Library and Information Sciences (or “SLIS”).  In the SOE the MA in Educational Technology all courses are offered completely online for student convenience; in the NCCU School of Library and Information Science offers all classes are offered in dual-mode (both on campus and online) providing dual instructional modalities for students whose learning styles favor either an online or a traditional face-to-face learning experience. The NCCU SOE is regularly accredited by NCATE (soon to be CAEP) and the NCCU SLIS has been regularly accredited by the ALA. The complete program has a grand total of 48 hours to complete both degrees.

The NCCU MA–MIS joint Master’s degree program focuses on developing student competencies in the following areas:

  1. Designing online learning environments, activities and assessments for meaningful learning;
  2. Selecting appropriate technology tools and learning objects to support online learners;
  3. Investigating uses of learning management systems to support and deliver online learning
  4. Organization of information;
  5. Data visualization;
  6. Understand usability, user experience, new technology and communication;
  7. Learn best practices for needs assessment, task analysis and course design and development; and
  8. Create strategies that advance teaching and learning with technology.

General Admission Requirements for both Programs

Prospective students must apply separately for the MA–MIS program in the SOE and in the SLIS. These students must also meet separate admission standards in both the School of Education and School of Library and Information Science.  The Graduate Program in Educational Technology in the SOE has no entrance examination requirement. Additional requirements for program admission can be acquired from both the SLIS and SOE.

 Exit Requirements for both Programs

Students must satisfy academic requirements in both programs.  Grades earned in courses of one program will not be included in the GPA calculations of the other program. Students will be expected to complete all MA and MIS exams at times they are scheduled (such as Masters Comprehensive Examinations); exceptions are the sole discretion of each school, in accordance with their respective policies.

Program Requirements:

Students will earn a Master of Arts in Educational Technology and Master of Information Science.

The MA in Educational Technology degree is a 24 hour 100% online course of study. The Educational Design courses focus on E–Learning via: Current and Emerging technologies; Dynamic Online Instructional Methods; Innovative Online Course Design; Entrepreneurial Course Delivery Procedures; and the Construction of Interactive E–Learning Resources and Tools. This degree prepares candidates to develop entrepreneurial online content for both educational and non–educational settings.

For students who aspire to gain instructional design skills as part of the educational technology degree program, the program offers a series of in–depth high level courses that enable them to gain professional technological proficiency in E–Learning Systems, E–Learning Content Creation, E–Learning Course Construction, and E–Learning Course Implementation. Please consult with your advisor for details

For students who aspire to have careers in the K-12 setting, the Educational Technology degree program provides options for licensure with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).  With the guidance of your faculty advisor, students may design their learning plan to meet the qualifications for add–on licensure for NCDPI Instructional Technology Specialist (88077) and  NCDPI Technology Endorsement (88079). Students desiring to earn these licensure designations are required to have  an “A” teaching certification upon program entry. Candidates are also required to complete a Practicum and an E–Portfolio upon program exit. After completing the program will students are capable of serving as educators in the K–12 setting in a variety of positions including (but not limited to): teachers, technology facilitators, or as technology coordinators. At the conclusion of the program, students qualify for a North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Administrative Level 077 – Instructional Technology Specialist Computer (Add–On) License and a North Carolina Department of Public Instruction 079 – Technology Endorsement (indicating a high level of technological proficiency). Students must apply to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for their license upon Program completion.

Program Requirements: M.I.S. Degree, Information Science Graduate Program

The Master of Information Science (M.I.S.) degree is a 24-hour graduate-level program that trains individuals to understand and analyze the role of information systems in solving organizational problems and achieving organizational goals. The focus is on designing information systems to help people and organizations function more effectively. Students take a total of 4 MIS core courses and 4 electives focused on educational technology and instructional design.  Students may choose classes based upon program emphasis, Educational Design or Instructional Technology.

In the first two years of the program, students are required to enroll for one full year of study at the School of Library and Information Science and for one full year of study in the MA Program; either can come first. In the third and fourth years of the program, joint-degree students are enrolled in and take courses at both programs.  Both programs have their own requirements for these upper level years.

MIS Students will also choose from School of Library and Information Sciences electives, based on curriculum emphasis (consult with your advisor):
