About the SLIS Library
Welcome to the NCCU School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS) Library!
Mission Statement
The SLIS Library provides resources, services and facilities necessary to support the mission of the School of Library and Information Sciences as established by the School. Inherent in the Library’s mission is the provision of bibliographic, physical and electronic access to information, knowledge and data for the present and anticipated instructional and research needs of the faculty, students, and staff of the School. These same provisions to the extent feasible are offered to the School’s alumni and area information professionals.
About the SLIS Library
The School of Library and Information Sciences Library (SLIS) is located on the third floor of the James E. Shepard Memorial Library. The SLIS Library contains more than 40,000 volumes and subscribes to some 456 library related journals and periodicals (printed and electronic) and numerous electronic databases. The close proximity of the SLIS Library and the other NCCU libraries (James E. Shepard, the Music Library, Curriculum Materials Center, and the Law Library) provides students with effortless access to non-library and information science resources.
The SLIS Library collection supports the teaching and research requirements of the faculty and students of the School. The library collects materials on the topics of library science, information science, children’s literature and other related fields. The School offers two degrees: the Master of Library Science and the Master of Information Science. The School also has joint degree programs with the NCCU School of Law and the School of Business.
All circulating materials in the SLIS collection may be checked out by NCCU faculty, students and staff who present a valid NCCU I.D. at the time of check-out.
The TRLN Cooperative Lending Card and the UNC Cooperative Lending Card (provides checkout privileges at any of the fifteen state supported Universities) are also honored when checking out SLIS materials. All users are responsible for any library materials checked out with their I.D. cards. The TRLN Cooperative Library Lending Program and theĀ University Library Advisory Council Cooperative Library Borrowing Program (ULAC) is a cooperative agreement among the libraries of the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN). Participating institutions include: Duke University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. NCCU faculty, currently enrolled students and staff may obtain borrowing privileges from the participating libraries.
Durham County Public Library and its branches, along with the libraries of the Durham County schools, are also available to SLIS students.
SLIS Collections
Materials located in the SLIS Library are catalogued and arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
The professional collection consists of materials in library and information science, and other related fields. Included in the collection are books (circulating and reference), periodicals, newsletters, indexes, vertical file and audiovisual materials.
The juvenile collection supports courses taught in the School of Library and Information Sciences and in the School of Education that pertain to children’s literature, school librarianship, and children’s librarianship in public libraries. The Easy Collection, Juvenile Fiction Collection, Juvenile Non- Fiction Collection and audiovisual materials comprise the collection.
Online databases available from the library,s homepage include the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) consortium cooperative agreement that allows access to the online catalogs of Duke University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Also available through an initiative by the State of North Carolina, North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education (NC LIVE) allows access to a variety of electronic resources, many of which provide full-text.
Reserve Books and Articles are selected and placed “On Reserve” by the faculty teaching courses in the School. SLIS reserve materials are located behind the circulation desk. You must present a valid NCCU I.D. card to check out these materials. Books that are not labeled “Library Use Only” can circulate within the library for four (4) hours, but are available for varying loan periods with permission. Photocopied articles and faculty members’ personal copies of books are kept in boxes that have been placed on bookcases behind the circulation desk. These items are non-circulating. The boxes are labeled according to LSIS course numbers. If you need assistance in locating any of these materials, do not hesitate to ask at the Circulation Desk. When borrowing materials, a valid student identification card must be presented.
There are two Special Collections: the Black Librarians Collection, consisting of papers and manuscripts; and the William Tucker Collection that includes works by African American authors and illustrators of children’s materials.
