MLS curricula — School Media Coordinator


Objectives for the school media coordinator concentration provide experiences through the curriculum which enable the graduate to:

  1. Develop and implement plans to ensure effective management of the school media center as an integral part of the educational program.
  2. Provide a variety of services that extend and reinforce the instructional program of the school.
  3. Coordinate effectively the identification, evaluation, selection, organization, and preservation of instructional resources.
  4. Be an effective manager.
  5. Demonstrate professional integrity by ethical behavior.
  6. Demonstrate evidence of professional growth and development.

Required Course of Study (39 semester hours)

(1) Check the NCCU Course Schedules for class offerings. Use the schedule to develop your Course of Study Schedule and Timeline.

(2) Read the SLIS Frequently Asked Questions.

(3) The Chair of the Admissions Committee,  can assist you with Registration and Student Services concerns

(4) Registration for on-campus classes can be done through Banner, and the registration for online classes is done through the SLIS Director of Graduate Studies. Please see your “New Student Information Guide” for instructions.

(5) Your advisor can assist you with academic concerns.

  • LSIS 5130, Administration of the School Media Center
  • LSIS 5505, Children’s Resources and Services
  • LSIS 5525, Adolescent Resources and Services
  • LSIS 5620, Practicum Class or 1 Year Work Experience as Media Coordinator. Supervisor Completes the Exit Criteria Form.
  • LSIS 5810, Research Methods, or a course that assures that students demonstrate an understanding of the methods of research that are effective in Education (consult your advisor).
  • LSIS 5645, Family and Community Relationships (Only offered on campus) OR
  • LSIS 5614, Information Technologies in Educational Organizations (Only offered online)

AND

Foreign Language Requirements: 

The School of Library and Information Sciences is committed to its mission to prepare professionals to become leaders who can advance the library and information sciences in a diverse and global society. SLIS previously required its graduates to meet foreign language standards or equivalent standards. Currently, there is no foreign language requirement for students in the Masters of Library Science or Masters of Information Science programs.

Students who need a foreign language for their future careers are able to take courses at the North Carolina Central University Modern Foreign Language Department. No courses taken for this purpose may be counted for course credit toward a master’s degree in library science or information science or related certificates.

All students must complete the Application For Graduation Form at the beginning of the semester in which they expect to graduate. This is a time sensitive document. Please be mindful of emails from the SLIS concerning graduation processes.

NCATE / DPI Benchmarks:

All Candidates (SLIS Students) in the Media Coordinator Track are responsible for contacting the SLIS Media Coordinator Advisor after each benchmark is met during their matriculation. All benchmarks must be complete before graduation and/or licensure can be processed.

Candidate (SLIS Students) Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions:
The media coordinator licensure program is providing more focus and visibility to its internal and external assessment by organizing them under five gateways.

Candidates (SLIS Students) must contact their advisor upon completion of each gateway.

  1. Gateway 1: School of Library & Information Sciences Program Admission Review
  2. Gateway 2: Core Class (15 Hours) Review
  3. Gateway 3: School Media Licensure Content Area Class (12 Hours) Review
  4. Gateway 4: Professional Education Review
  5. Gateway 5: Program Completion Review

Candidate (SLIS Student) Performance Requirements:

    • Gateway 1: SLIS Admissions
      • Applicant has earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
      • Applicant turns in appropriate materials
      • Applicant meets entrance criteria
      • Applicant declares SLIS track of interest
      • Applicant assigned an Advisor according to designated program track
      • Applicant and Advisor review track to develop a course of study for the Candidate

Additional Information Pertaining to Requirements for North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Media Coordinator Licensure


Note: If you already hold a license in another area from the NC Department of Public Instruction (obtained with an Undergraduate Education degree) you do not have to take the undergraduate education courses below.

Undergraduate Education Requirements:

A. Take ONE (1) Undergraduate Level Course from an Accredited Education Program/School related to Foundations of Education. Examples of courses that meet this requirement:

      • Introduction to Educational Psychology
      • Diversity, Pedagogy & Social Change
      • Foundations of Education

AND

B. Take ONE (1) Undergraduate Level Course from an Accredited Education Program/School related to Measurement and Evaluation (Assessment) of Learning. Examples of courses that meet this requirement:

      • Assessment of Learning
      • Foundations in Literacy Assessment
      • Introduction to Statistical Methods in Education
      • Literacy Assessment & Intervention

AND

  • Students must pass the PRAXIS Exam: Media Coordinator Specialty Area
  • To Apply for Licensure (After you have completed the MLS and Additional Requirements Above), apply through NCCU School of Education Licensure Office. The NCCU Licensure officer is Dr. Sharon Spencer, Assistant Dean,(phone: 919-530-5208; fax: 919-530-5279). At the www.nccu.edu/soe web site, click on NCDPI Licensure in left frame under “Our Services ” and then click on Licensure Application packet or click here
  • Use the application form as a cover sheet.
  • There is one form in the packet that the Program Coordinator has to sign for you. Please complete the SOE Verification form and fax it to the office at 919-530-6402 and to be verified, signed, and faxed to the School of Education or back to the student. Note: there is an NCDPI licensure application fee that is collected by the SOE along with your licensure packet.
