Biography
Dr. Barbara Montgomery, a native Philadelphian, now residing in South Carolina, has worked in children’s services in both public and school libraries. During her nine years as a public librarian she served as an outreach librarian and as head of the Children’s room of the Greenville County Library. Performing stories and training other children’s librarians to do programming. She was a school library media specialist in four school districts. Before ending her career as a school library media specialist Dr. Montgomery earned the distinction of National Board Certification.
Dr. Montgomery received her doctoral degree from the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science in August of 2013. Her research interests are focused in literacy, especially as it concerns older African Americans who attended segregated elementary schools without on sight libraries. Dr. Montgomery has found that former Rosenwald School attendees have many stories to tell about these segregated schools and hopes that as she uncovers their stories these stories will help to decrease the perpetuation of generational illiteracy in younger African Americans.
As an Assistant Professor in the NCCU SLIS Dr. Montgomery teaches Children’s Literature, School Media Administration, Families and Communities, and helps to oversee the school library media program.
Dr. Montgomery is the author of an essay titled “The “Qualified” Black Librarian” which was included in The 21st Century Black Librarian in America: Issues and Challenges, edited by Andrew P. Jackson, Julius C. Jefferson, Jr., and Akilah S. Nosakhere. Dr. Montgomery continues to work on other projects and grow her portfolio of work.
