Opening Keynote: “The Future of Scholarly Journals and the Important Role of Libraries in this Future” After four decades of promise and anticipation of electronic journals, we are finally there. However, technology and economic realities have opened up unforeseen opportunities for new initiatives such as extensive aggregation of titles and articles, the big deals, institutional open access, author payment open access, and exciting advanced features of electronic journals provided by traditional publishers. What does this all mean to the future of scholarly journals and to libraries? This talk attempts to sort out the strengths and weaknesses of these initiatives and why libraries will continue to be an essential participant regardless of future directions. Donald W. Open access to scholarly papers is a worthy goal and already creating far-reaching implications for those who author and publish. But a move to open access also affects library operations. How much of a transition will occur? How fast will it happen? As the scholarly community changes, how can serials librarians best position themselves for the future? Join us for a conversation about the impact of open access and the role librarians can play in this new environment.
