What is Independent Study in Information Science?

Independent Study in Information Science provides students with an opportunity for advanced study of specific topics in Information Science. It is designed for students who have completed basic and intermediate courses and:

  • Who want to study specific topics that are not offered in the curriculum or
  • Who want to study a specific topic in more depth than is offered in the curriculum.

What process should be followed for an Independent Study in Information Science?

Independent Study in Information Science is different from a normal class. Students in Independent Study must take responsibility for their own learning. The process for a student in Independent Study follows these steps:

  1. Write a proposal, using the format shown below.
  2. Find a faculty member who is willing to work with you, based on your proposal.
  3. Register for LSIS 5700, Independent Study.
  4. Do your independent study, following the proposal that you and the faculty member have agreed to.
  5. Consult with the faculty member as needed.
  6. Submit your work to the faculty member, based on your proposal.
  7. The faculty member will review your work and give you a grade, based on the evaluative criteria outlined in your proposal.

Can I do an Independent Study?

You may register for Independent Study in Information Science if you can answer yes to all of these questions:

  1. Have I successfully completed the core courses in Information Science?
  2. Can I work well without any pressure from a teacher?
  3. Do I want to study something that is not in the curriculum or something that is not covered in the desired depth in the curriculum?
  4. Do I have a specific proposal for an Independent Study? If you do not have a clear plan, you cannot do an Independent Study.
  5. Have I found a faculty member who is willing to work with me, based on my proposal?
