Assistant Head of Special Collections

The University of Arkansas Libraries is seeking a highly collaborative and engaged leader to serve as Assistant Head of Special Collections. This person will lead, shape, and assist in development and delivery of departmental priorities, through special projects to deliver innovative services, processes, and outreach.  Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, this position supports the Department Head in the daily management of the department (approx. 11 FTE) through project management, assessment, and donor relations. The Assistant Head will participate in the department’s Collection Development, Processing, Outreach, and Exhibition teams. Additional duties will include contributing to the Libraries’ growing digital collections, coordinating department events, and seeking grant-funded opportunities.

Qualifications.  Required:  A master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program, or related advanced degree and ACA certification; at least 4 years of professional experience working in a cultural heritage institution with increasing management experience; demonstrated experience arranging, describing, and managing archival collections; demonstrated experience with archival and library standards and tools, such as EAD, MARC, LCSH, and DACS; demonstrated experience providing innovative public service, specifically reference and instruction; experience contributing to physical exhibitions; and experience contributing to digital collections.  Preferred:  A second advanced degree; working knowledge of budget processes; experience with grant writing and administration; experience in donor relations and cultivation; experience working with ArchivesSpace, Preservica, AEON, and Archive-It or equivalent tools; and working knowledge of digital repository systems and digital curation.

Rank and Salary:  Tenure-track, twelve-month faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Librarian / Associate Professor.  Salary: $70,000.

Special Collections Department:  The Special Collections Department was created in 1967 to encourage research and writing in the history and culture of Arkansas and the surrounding region.  The mission of the department is to acquire, preserve, and provide access to materials to support scholarly investigation of the state, its customs and people, and its cultural, physical, and political climate.  Special Collections houses approximately 15,000 linear feet of manuscript collections, approximately 28,000 titles of Arkansas print material, more than 100,000 photographs, and about 10,000 maps and rare books, and the University Archive.  Notable collections include: the papers of Senator J. William Fulbright, the Council for International Exchange of Scholar Records, the works of noted photographer Lawrence “Larry” W. Obsitnik, composers William Grant Still and Florence Price, writer John Gould Fletcher, and the Peace Links Papers.
