Position Vacancy – Science and Engineering Research Librarian

The Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Science and Engineering Librarian.  The successful candidate will join a culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber.

Reporting to the Head of Academic Outreach, the Science and Engineering Research Librarian will actively build and maintain relationships with faculty, students, and administrative units within the School of Engineering and Science and Mathematics departments within the College of Humanities and Sciences. The successful candidate will join a team including a second Science and Engineering Research Librarian and a Engineering and Science Collections Librarian to serve STEM faculty and students on the Monroe Park Campus. The Science and Engineering Librarian will provide course-integrated instruction, workshops, individual consultations, and research assistance. The person will actively pursue outreach opportunities to promote library services and advance research and learning for STEM faculty and students. They will ensure services are relevant to evolving STEM research demands by actively monitoring scholarship in the field and the curriculum and research interests of the faculty. Academic Outreach Librarians are expected to contribute beyond their subject area by providing collaborative and cross-disciplinary support for departmental and library-wide outreach activities. Academic Outreach librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Faculty with VCU Libraries are evaluated and promoted on the basis of job performance, scholarship, and professional development and service.

Qualifications

Required: ALA-accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree in another appropriate discipline.  Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

 

Preferred: A degree in a STEM-related discipline.  Experience teaching in a classroom setting or providing in depth research assistance. Familiarity with specialized sources and research methods for science and engineering. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty. Evidence of creativity, initiative, and flexibility when working independently and on teams. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
